Tri-Comm Works 4 Vehicle MVA with Rollovers and Fire in Ooltewah

OOLTEWAH, TENN – Thursday, May 3, 2007 – The afternoon quiet was broken at about 2:15 PM today
when the Tri Community Volunteer Fire Department was toned out for what was originally said to be a
three vehicle MVA with a van on its side.  The location, Mountain View Road at Blanche Road is only
about two miles from Ooltewah High School which is located on Mountain View Road.  The time was
about right for school to be dismissed and firefighters worried that school age people could be victims.

Engine 1244 was the first to arrive on scene and found a van on its side, on fire.  They also found three
more vehicles involved, one of them a dump truck which was on its side having lost a load of dirt.  A third
vehicle, a Honda, was off the roadway and had extensive front end damage.  The fourth, a Ford Utility
Truck had major damage to the driver’s side.  The vehicles were scattered about the area.

Heavy Rescue 1281, along with another engine company, were also dispatched to the scene.  Two
Medic Units from Hamilton County EMS, Medic 1 and Medic 5 were also dispatched.  The driver of the
van, a GMC, sustained a serious leg injury.  He was able to self extricate from the van before it caught
on fire.  The male driver of the Honda was also injured slightly.  Both were transported to the hospital by
Medic 5 with non life threatening injuries.  Neither the driver of the Utility Truck or the Mack Dump Truck
was injured.

Mutual aid was requested from Highway 58 VFD for manpower.  They responded with one engine
company.  The Hamilton County Hazardous Materials Unit was also requested due to a large diesel spill
from the overturned dump truck.

Debris from the accident was scattered all over the intersection and beyond.  It took firefighters and
workers from private company’s hours to clean up the mess.  Meanwhile, the roadway was closed.
Traffic direction was done by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department.  The Sheriff’s Department is
also handling the investigation and has not yet released any information as to the cause.

Many emergency workers on the scene stated that they could not believe that there was no serious
injury or loss of life.
