Mobile Home Gutted by Fire in Fort Oglethorpe

FORT OGLETHORPE, GA – Only minutes before 7:30 PM, Monday, October 15, 2007, callers to
Catoosa County 9-1-1 reported a mobile home on fire at 428 Karen Drive.  Fort Oglethorpe
Engine 10, Fort Oglethorpe Engine 8 and Catoosa Engine 3 were dispatched immediately.

Battalion Chief Marlin Thompson (906) was the first to arrive and reported heavy smoke from a
single wide trailer.  As Chief Thompson was finishing his 360 degree walk around, Battalion Chief
Doug Flury (907) and Engine 10 arrived on scene.  At the same time, visible fire began blowing
from a window on the front of the trailer at the “B” end.  Firefighters Cameron Dean and Thomas
Smith pulled an inch and three quarter line and made their way inside the structure to begin an
attack.  Lt. Todd Sliger also entered and began a primary search.  Neighbors were unsure if the
dwelling was occupied at the time and there was a car in the driveway.

The primary search was negative.  Firefighters Dean and Smith made quick work of the fire which
was well seated in the interior of the mobile home.  Destroyed were two rooms, a bathroom, and
parts of the hallway.  The remainder of the structure had major smoke and water damage.  The
home is now uninhabitable.  Total damage is estimated at about $30,000.

The cause and origin of the fire are unknown at this time and under investigation.  No one was at
home when the fire broke out and their were no injuries.

The Catoosa County Sheriff’s Department assisted on the scene as did Angel EMS.  The Fort
Oglethorpe Fire Department Air/Light Truck was on the scene to refill air bottles and provide
rehab.
