18 Wheeler Leaves the Interstate, Rolls Over

CHATTANOOGA, TENN – Sometime around 3:00 AM, Friday, September 21, 2007, the Chattanooga
Fire Department responded to the junction of Interstate 75 and Interstate 24 on a reported tractor
trailer overturned with entrapment.

Chattanooga Fire Department Quint 8 and Quiet arrived at almost the same time.  Captain Ken Moses
with Quint 8 cancelled the Squad Trucks with regard to extrication and his personnel along with those
from Quint 13 were able to free the driver.

The tractor trailer combination was southbound on Interstate 75 just past the junction where it splits
and becomes I-24 west as I-75 continues south into Georgia.  The driver continued west on I-24 for a
few hundred feet and then veered off of the roadway to the left, down an embankment, through a
small thicket of trees and back up an incline before the rig rolled over on its right side.  There were no
other vehicles involved in the crash.

Workers from Yates Wrecker Service were on hand through the night working to get the 18 wheeler
upright and then remove it.  They were finally able to do so shortly before 9:00 AM.  This area is
extremely heavily traveled all of the time but especially during rush hour.  Even though the wreckage
was well off the roadway, traffic was slowed to a crawl during the morning hours as those passing by
slowed and even stopped in some cases to look at the accident scene.  The tractor trailer is
registered to Grand Traverse Trucking in Traverse City, Michigan.  It is unknown what it was hauling
at the time of the accident.  The investigation into the cause of the accident is being handled by the
Chattanooga Police Department.
