Forsyth County Recruits Train in Burn Building

FORSYTH COUNTY, GA – The Fire Department of Forsyth County, Georgia currently has 18 recruits
going through their sixteen week fire training session.  The recruits are now at the point where they are
ready for live fire exercises and today, Friday, August 3, 2007, was the first of those exercises.

Forsyth County Fire Department currently operates its own facility for live burn training.  It consists of three
metal trailers all hooked together with two of them forming a two story building.  As part of today’s training,
the recruits had to advance hose lines into the building and extinguish a fire that was set using wooden
pallets.  Each recruit had a turn on the nozzle as others in their team assisted on the line.

After lunch, the fire was set in the bottom section of the two story part to simulate a basement fire.  Again
the recruits advanced a hose line in on the top floor and had to go down the stairs to locate the fire and
put it out.  Due to the fire being in the downstairs part, it was much hotter inside the building in the
afternoon than in the morning.  Recruits were treated to their first live fire with Forsyth County but also
found out what it was like to be very, very hot inside the building.

During all of the exercises, there were several members of the training department of the fire department
present, including the Chief of Training as well as experienced firefighters from Engine 12.  There was
incident command as well as an interior command and safety officers strategically placed to ensure
compliance with all safety procedures and to maintain an environment where risk was kept to a minimum.
Medics with Rural Metro EMS were also present to assist in case they were needed.

The recruits will now continue with classroom and practical training and will be back in the burn building
again soon to complete more training.
