Bicyclist Injured When Struck by Van

FORT OGLETHORPE, GA – At about 5:45 PM, Monday, September 24, 2007, Fort Oglethorpe Fire &
Rescue responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a bicycle at the intersection of Cloud Springs
Road and Fant Drive.  Upon arrival, a male subject was located in the street, lying directly in front of a
Chevrolet Venture van.  The male had some abrasions, small cuts and what looked like an injury to
his leg and ankle.  No one in the vehicle was injured.

The patient was treated on the scene by medics with Angel EMS and then with the help of firefighters
loaded onto a backboard, placed in the waiting ambulance and transported to T. C. Thompson
Children’s Hospital.  His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The van had been traveling eastbound on Cloud Springs Road when the bicyclist crossed the
roadway in front of it.  The female driver of the van was unable to stop and avoid the collision.  It was
obvious from the placement of the vehicle that she swerved in an attempt to miss him.  Due to the
damage to the front of the car and also the windshield, it appears that the bicyclist was struck by the
right front bumper, knocked onto the hood and then into the windshield.

The roadway was shut down for the investigation by the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department.  They
are investigating the accident and will determine the cause.  As of this time no charges have been
filed.
