Murals Honoring Fire and Police Chiefs Unveiled in Fort Oglethorpe

FORT OGLETHORPE, GA – Friday, November 02, 2007 – Fort Oglethorpe Mayor Judd Burkhart came
up with an idea some time ago to capture the rich history of the City on murals that would hang in City
Hall.  The City Council agreed to the project and Gateway Bank and Trust, a locally owned bank, was
contacted to ask for their financial assistance.  They agreed and the project was begun.  Today, two
murals were unveiled.  One has likenesses of all six of the Fire Chiefs who have served the City.  The
other does the same thing with all of the Police Chiefs.

With some of the past Chiefs and their families along with family members of other Chiefs present, the
murals were unveiled by the City Council in a ceremony at City Hall today at 6:00 PM.  Current Fire Chief
Bruce Ballew did the honors for the Fire Department and introduced those family members present.
Past Police Chief Doug Howell took care of matters for the Police Department.  Current Police Chief
Larry Black was unable to attend due to an illness in the family.

When the ceremony concluded, everyone was treated to cake while they watched a slide show that
featured past and present pictures from both departments.  These murals will hang in City Hall for all to
see as a reminder of the past.
