| MVC with Entrapment in Fort Oglethorpe FORT OGLETHORPE, GA – At about 2:45 PM, Tuesday, July 03, 2007, Fort Oglethorpe Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with injuries at Lakeview Drive and E. Circle Drive. Fort Oglethorpe Engine 1 and 907, Battalion Chief Doug Flury responded. Engine 1 arrived on the scene and Lt. Tom Lowrance took command. He advised that there were two vehicles involved, a side impact type collision and one person still in the vehicle. Moments later, Lt. Lowrance advised that he had entrapment that would require extrication. Chief Flury arrived on scene and took command and Lt. Lowrance along with his crew began extrication. The trapped individual, a female, was operating a Mercury Cougar. The other vehicle involved was a Chevrolet Astrovan. The van struck the passenger car at almost a 90 degree angle in the driver’s door causing major damage to the left side of it. The van suffered only minor front end damage and some damage to the driver’s side. The vehicles were positioned so that the driver’s side of the Cougar was completely inaccessible. Firefighters were forced to cut off the passenger side door, cut the A and B posts on both sides and flap the roof. This was accomplished in approximately 20-25 minutes. Once this was done they were able to remove the patient fairly easily. She was treated by medics from Hutcheson EMS and transported to Erlanger Hospital in serious condition. A second person in this vehicle, a young female was ambulatory upon arrival but complaining of pain in the chest and was taken to Children’s hospital by Angel EMS. The driver of the van was unhurt. Witnesses at the scene stated that the van had been westbound on Lakeview Drive and the Cougar southbound on East Circle Drive. According to these witnesses, the Cougar pulled out in front of the van attempting to turn east on Lakeview Drive. Both vehicles ended up in the eastbound lane with the Cougar in a ditch. The Catoosa County Sheriff’s Department was on the scene assisting with traffic. The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol. |
