| I-75 Rollover Injures One in Chattanooga CHATTANOOGA, TENN – Tuesday, May 15, 2007 – At just about 4:00 PM, right at the start of rush hour, the 9-1-1 center in Chattanooga began receiving calls of a motor vehicle accident with injuries, involving a rollover, on I-75 near the intersection of Highway 153. This particular corridor of northbound I-75, where it intersects with Highway 153 and also exits for East Brainerd Road and the Hamilton Place Mall is particularly busy at any time of day and especially during rush hour. It is a difficult area to maneuver in, especially if you are unfamiliar with it. The exit lanes for Highway 153 are the same as the merge lanes for the entrance ramp fro East Brainerd Road for both 153 and I-75. Chattanooga Fire Department Quint 21 and Quint 8 both responded per protocol since the accident was on the interstate. Quint 21 arrived on the scene and found four vehicles involved, two tractor trailers and two passenger vehicles. One of the passenger vehicles, a Jeep, was on its side. The lone occupant of the Jeep, a female, was slightly injured but was ambulatory and had self extricated from the vehicle. There were no other injuries. The driver of the Jeep was treated at the scene by medics from Hamilton County EMS and transported to Erlanger Hospital. Damage to both tractor trailers and the second vehicle, a Chevrolet, was minimal. Damage to the Jeep was extensive. According to one of the tractor trailer drivers, the Jeep was in the right lane and attempted to move from that lane causing him to swerve in an effort to miss it. He was unable to avoid the collision and the Jeep overturned. The other two vehicles were unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time. Tennessee Department of Transportation Highway Incident Response Units were on scene assisting with traffic. They also were able to upright the Jeep to remove it from the travel lanes to help traffic return to normal. Traffic on northbound I-75 was backed up for several miles. The accident is being investigated by the Chattanooga Police Department. No official cause has yet been given. |
