Single Vehicle vs. Tree with Entrapment

CATOOSA COUNTY, GA – At about 11:45 AM, Friday, October 30, 2009 the Catoosa County 9-1-1
Communications Center was notified of an accident with entrapment on Burning Bush Road near the
intersection of Country Lane.  Catoosa County Engine 6 and Fort Oglethorpe Engine 1 were
dispatched to the scene.

Catoosa Engine 6 arrived on the scene to find a single vehicle, a hearse, against a large tree with
major front end damage and one person, the driver, entrapped.  Firefighters immediately pulled the
hydraulic equipment from the engine and began to set up for extrication while medics from Angel
EMS assessed the male patient.  When Fort Oglethorpe Engine 1 arrived they assisted with the
extrication.  Firefighters, using the jaws, removed the driver’s side door.  Once that was complete
they made a relief cut below the dash, cut the A post and rolled the dash in order to remove the
driver.

Due to the mechanism of injury and the driver complaining of chest pains, the decision was made
early on to have Life Force helicopter transport the patient.  Fort Oglethorpe Engine 8 established a
landing zone just south of the accident scene and Life Force 1 landed there.  Medical personnel
from the helicopter proceeded to the scene and then accompanied the patient back to the landing
zone.  The patient was then transported by air to Erlanger Hospital.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.  It appeared that the
hearse was traveling northbound on Burning Bush when it crossed into the oncoming lane, left the
roadway on the west side of the street, went through the yard at 1608 Burning Bush Road and
struck the tree head on.   The Catoosa County Sheriff’s Department assisted with traffic control.
