MVC With Entrapment in Catoosa County

At about 11:10 AM, Monday, October 22, 2007, the Catoosa County, Georgia Fire Department was
dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries and entrapment in the 2400 block of
Graysville Road near Julian Road.  At about the same time as Catoosa Engine 3 got en route,
Chattanooga, Tennessee Quint 21 was dispatched to the 1000 block of Graysville Road in the city of
Chattanooga for a similar wreck. The state line is in the vicinity of both of these addresses and many
callers are unfamiliar with which state they are in.

Chattanooga Quint 21 arrived on the scene moments before Engine 3.  The wreck which was just south of
Julian Road, was determined to be in the State of Georgia but firefighters with Quint 21 remained on the
scene to assist.  Catoosa County Rescue 1 also responded to the scene.

The accident involved on vehicle, a white Ford Explorer.  The Explorer left the roadway, entered a ditch
and turned over on its side.  At the time of the accident it was raining very hard and the rain continued
coming down during the entire extrication process.  The female driver, although not seriously injured, was
trapped in the vehicle, pinned by the steering wheel.  Firefighters took a few minutes to attempt to extricate
her out the back door of the vehicle but removing the back seat.  Because of the position of the driver,
they were unable to perform the extrication this way.

Next, firefighters cut out the windshield using a pick head ax, then cut the A Posts on each side of the
vehicle using the Jaws.  Next the roof was cut just in front of the B post and the roof was flapped.  Once
this was accomplished it was fairly easy to remove the patient.  She was placed on a backboard and
transported to the hospital by Hutcheson EMS.

Catoosa Engine 3 remained on the scene while the vehicle was being removed.  The accident is being
investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.  Although not confirmed by GSP, it is believed that the vehicle left
the slippery roadway due to the road conditions.  This is the first significant rain the area has seen in
months.  The Catoosa County Sheriff’s Department was also on the scene and took care of traffic control.
