Burning Camper Catches House on Fire in Catoosa County

CATOOSA COUNTY, GA – Just before 6:00 PM, Tuesday, October 20, 2009, the Catoosa county
Fire Department responded to a report of a travel trailer on fire with structure endangerment at 3819
Highway 41.  The fire department responded with three engines, a ladder and a tanker.

Engine 3 arrived on the scene to find a 32 foot Four Winds travel trailer about seventy percent
involved in fire.  The trailer was parked about 1 foot from the adjacent house and the entire side of
the house was also engulfed in flames.

Firefighters immediately pulled two inch and three quarter lines.  One was placed into service
immediately, fighting the fire in the trailer and the side of the house.  The second line was pulled to
the front door of the house and entry was made in order to cut off the fire.  Firefighters were able to
contain the fire to the attic area and one room on that end of the house.  There was some smoke
damage to the remainder of the house but firefighters’ efforts saved the majority of the families
belongings.  Unfortunately the trailer and all of its contents were destroyed.

The homeowner stated that he had been working on winterizing the trailer and that when his dogs
began barking he looked outside and saw smoke coming from the trailer.  The trailer was insured but
the house was not.  The homeowner placed the value of the trailer and its contents at about
$10,000.  He was unable to estimate the damage to the house.

Firefighters were forced to lay a supply line across the busy Highway 41 and the roadway had to be
shut down and traffic rerouted.  The Catoosa County Sheriff’s Department handled these duties.
Angel EMS was on the scene however there were no reported injuries.

The family was displaced and the American Red Cross was called in to assist.  The exact cause of the
fire is unknown and under investigation.
