Car vs. Tree Traps One in Fort Oglethorpe



FORT OGLETHORPE, GA – Sunday, August 17, 2008 – Just after 3:00 AM, Fort Oglethorpe Fire
and Rescue responded to a report of a one vehicle crash with entrapment on Westside Country
Drive at Mockingbird Lane.  Fort Oglethorpe Engine 1, Engine 10 and Rescue 1 responded to the
call.

On arrival, firefighters found a Hyundai Sonata that had struck a tree head on, The car had heavy
damage and driver was trapped inside.  The driver was trapped and unresponsive when firefighters
arrived.  While some firefighters and EMS personnal attended to the patient, other team of
firefighters began the arduous task of extrication.  Due to the patient’s condition, extended
extrication time and the mechanism of injury, Life Force helicopter was requested to the scene.

The extent of the damage to the vehicle made extrication difficult and it took over thirty minutes to
remove the patient from the car.  Once he was extricated, the driver was turned over to paramedics
with Angel EMS and also the medical team from Life Force.  He was transported to the landing zone
and flown to Erlanger Hospital in critical condition.

The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol with assistance from the Fort
Oglethorpe Police Department.
