Highway 58 VFD Battles Afternoon House Fire

HAMILTON COUNTY, TENN – At about 1:30 PM, Thursday, August 13, 2009, the Highway 58
Volunteer Fire Department was notified of a residential house fire in the 8900 block of Ooltewah
Georgetown Road north of Mahan Gap Road.  Several pieces of apparatus responded to the call
and firefighters reported seeing a large column of smoke in that area from a long way away.

The first arriving firefighter reported a single story wood frame residence with a metal roof with
heavy smoke showing and fire inside.  As apparatus arrived, firefighters pulled an inch and three
quarter line to the front door and one to the rear of the structure.  An interior attack was mounted
and the fire was quickly knocked down.  Ladder 1670 laid a four inch supply line almost 2000 feet
from the nearest hydrant.  

Unfortunately fire had consumed much of the interior of the house prior to the arrival of
firefighters.  Some of the homeowners possessions were saved by the house is considered a total
loss.  The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation at this time.  

Ooltewah Georgetown Road, a two lane road, was closed for firefighter safety during the
operation.  The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department assisted with traffic and Hamilton County
EMS was on stand by in case of injuries.  There were no injuries associated with the fire.  A
monetary damage estimate is not yet available
