East Ridge FD Saves House

EAST RIDGE, TENN – Saturday, July 26, 2008 – Fire officials are crediting smoke detectors for
saving the lives of an East Ridge couple this morning after fire ravaged their house in the early
morning hours.

The East Ridge Fire Department received the call this morning at 3:08 reporting a residential
house fire at 6831 Martha Avenue.  East Ridge Squad 1, Engine 1, Engine 2, Quint 3, Rescue 1,
Support 1, Support 2 and Fort Oglethorpe Engine 10 responded to the call.  Lifeguard EMS also
was on the scene in case they were needed.

Engine 2 arrived on the scene to find a single story wood frame and brick structure with fire
showing out a window on the A/D corner.  Firefighters with Engine 2 and Squad 1 quickly pulled
an inch and three quarter line into the front door of the house.  As they proceeded into the
interior they were met by heavy fire on the east end of the house.  Firefighters got a quick knock
down on the fire and then started looking for hot spots and extension.  Other fire apparatus
arrived and additional firefighters helped with interior operations and overhaul.

Although the fire damage was contained to the east end of the house, heavy smoke, heat and
water damage was found throughout the residence.  Damage is estimated at about $80,000.

According to Erik Hopkins, Public Information Officer for the East Ridge Fire Department, the
homeowners stated that they were awakened by the smoke detectors and found their home filling
with smoke.  They quickly called 9-1-1, got the family dog and exited the structure.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.  East Ridge Fire/Arson Investigators are working to
determine the cause of the fire but say it does appear to be accidental.
