| Walker County Firefighters Battle Fully Involved House WALKER COUNTY, GA – Walker County 9-1-1 began receiving the calls reporting a house fire on Hollywood Drive at about 11:40 PM, Sunday, July 19, 2009. Several pieces of apparatus began responding immediately and Engine 7 reported seeing a large column of black smoke from the vicinity while en route. Engine 7 arrived on the scene and found a single story brick residence fully involved in fire. The closest hydrant was about 1500 feet away. Firefighters laid about 700 feet of three inch supply line to the first engine that served as a relay pumper to Engine 7. Firefighters had a difficult time accessing the area surrounding the house. It was down a hill and surrounded very closely by trees, bushes and overgrowth. There were also several bee hives around the exterior of the house. It is unknown at this time if anyone was living in the structure. Once firefighters gained access to the structure they found that the fire was well advanced and there was no possibility of getting inside to fight the fire. The Battalion Chief on the scene ordered a defensive attack. Firefighters spent the next couple of hours pouring water on the house from several different places in order to extinguish the fire. One firefighter was slightly injured and was treated on the scene by medics from Fire Medic 1 of Walker County Emergency Services. He was then transported to Hutcheson Medical Center. The cause and origin of the fire are unknown and under investigation at this time. |
