Great Stop in Catoosa County

CATOOSA COUNTY, GA – At 4:53 PM, Thursday, July 16, 2009, Catoosa County Fire Department and Fort
Oglethorpe Fire and Rescue were alerted to a residential structure fire at 129 Joan Drive in the Morris
Estates subdivision off Wooten Road.  Fort Oglethorpe Battalion Chief Doug Flury (907) was the first to
arrive on the scene and reported a two story brick dwelling with heavy smoke showing.  Chief Flury quickly
determined that the occupants had safely exited the building and were uninjured.

Catoosa County Engine 3 deployed an inch and three quarter attack line through the front door and
encountered fire moving up the stairs from the basement.  They were able to quickly knock down the fire
and move into the basement to extinguish the fire.  Firefighters from Fort Oglethorpe Engine 10 provided
assistance to the interior team.  Additional firefighters from both Catoosa County and Fort Oglethorpe
assisted in checking for extension and overhaul of the residence.  The majority of the fire damage was
contained to the basement and stairway leading upstairs.  The remainder of the residence did receive
smoke damage and was left uninhabitable for the time being.  The American Red Cross was called to the
scene to assist the family.

Firefighters were able to save one family pet, a dog, from the inside of the house.  It was barely responsive
when located and brought outside to waiting medics from Angel EMS who administered oxygen and water to
the dog.  A neighbor transported the dog to a local veterinarian.  Unfortunately the family cat did not survive
the fire.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown at this time and under investigation.
