| East Ridge Firefighters Make a Save EAST RIDGE, TENN – At about 4:05PM, Monday, June 29, 2009, the East Ridge Fire Department was dispatched to 8 Edwards Terrace neat the intersection of Greens Lake Road on a residential structure fire. The first apparatus arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke from the house and some fire showing from the peak of the roof. While some firefighters immediately began an aggressive interior attack, others laddered the roof and cut a ventilation hole allowing the intense heat and fire to escape from the attic. Because of the quick response, about three minutes for the first unit according to Erik Hopkins, Public Relations Officer for East Ridge Public Safety, firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading and saved the majority of the house and the belongings of the homeowner. The majority of the fire damage was confined to the kitchen and attic areas. According to PIO Hopkins, the 78 year old occupant of the home was cooking at the time the fire started but she was not injured by the fire. While firefighters were still on the scene, however, medics with Memorial EMS determined that she was suffering from a condition that required hospitalization and she was transported to Memorial Hospital. There were no other injuries as a result of the fire. The fire is under investigation by the East Ridge Fire Department Arson Investigations Unit, however, it is believed to be accidental. Damage is estimated at about $30,000. East Ridge Quint 1, Squad 2, Engine 1, Engine 2, Support 1, Rescue 1, Rescue 2 and HazMat 1 responded. Fort Oglethorpe Engine 1 responded on an automatic mutual aid alarm for additional manpower. Chattanooga Hamilton County Rescue Squad provided a rehab unit. The East Ridge Police Department also provided assistance. |
