| Four Car Crash in Fort Oglethorpe Results in One Fatality FORT OGLETHORPE, GA – At about 2:45 PM, Thursday, April 30, 2009, Fort Oglethorpe Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the intersection of Battlefield Parkway and Three Notch Road on a multiple vehicle accident with one vehicle on fire and possible entrapment. Fort Oglethorpe Engine 8, Catoosa County Engine 3, Catoosa County Battalion 1 and Fort Oglethorpe Battalion Chief 907 responded. Engine 8 arrived on the scene and found a four vehicle wreck with one vehicle, a white Ford Explorer on fire. The driver was out of the vehicle, however it is unknown if he self extricated or was ejected. Two other vehicles, a four door red Chevrolet Aveo and a white Dodge Ram pickup truck had collided head on. A fourth vehicle, a Ford F-150 pickup truck, was in a ditch facing the wrong way on the opposite side of Battlefield Parkway which is multiple lanes wide. It had a trailer attached and the shell of another car on the trailer. Angel EMS determined that the driver of the Ford Ranger was extremely critical and called for the Life Force helicopter. They also requested a total of three EMS units. 907, Battalion Chief Doug Flury took command at the scene and ordered the helicopter to land on Battlefield Parkway just west of the accident scene. Catoosa Engine 3 set up the landing zone and pulled an inch and three quarter line for safety. Firefighters from Engine 8 and medics from Angel EMS treated the victims. Unfortunately the driver of the Ranger went into cardiac arrest and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other patients were transported by Angel EMS. At least one was on critical condition. It appears that the Ranger was traveling eastbound and for some reason struck the F-150 which was headed in the same direction. After striking the F-150, the Ranger crossed the median strip and struck the westbound Dodge Ram in the driver’s side causing it to spin around and collide with the Aveo head on. The Aveo was also traveling west. Battlefield Parkway, a main east-west artery through Fort Oglethorpe and Catoosa County was closed for about an hour and a half. The Catoosa County Sheriff’s Department provided traffic control. The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol. |
