Harrison Home Goes Up in Flames

HARRISON, TENN – Wednesday, April 23, 2008 – The quarters for Hamilton County Medic 3 is
directly adjacent to Highway 58 VFD Station 1.  At about 4:30 PM, an EMS supervisor was leaving the
station when he noticed a large smoke column west of the station.  He drove toward the smoke
column and just as he entered the Deerwood Forest subdivision tones were sounded for a residential
structure fire at 6827 Buck Trail in that subdivision.  Moments later the EMS supervisor arrived on the
scene to find a house fully involved in fire.  He and deputies from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s
Department who arrived quickly thereafter were able to ascertain that no one was inside the
structure.  They also removed two small propane tanks from the rear of the structure.

Firefighters from two stations of Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene within
minutes and determined that the fire was already too far along to mount an interior attack.  After
laying almost 1000 feet of supply line to the closest hydrant, the ladder on 1670, the departments new
Quint, was raised and an aerial assault was made on the fire.  The fire was rapidly knocked down and
then hand lines were used to completely extinguish the fire.  Because the fire had consumed much of
the house prior to firefighters ever being notified there was nothing that could be done to save the
house.  A Lexus automobile that was parked in the garage was also destroyed by fire.

The homeowner, Mr. Sam Woolwine, was not at home when the fire broke out but did return while
firefighters were still on the scene.  Mr. Woolwine, who lives by himself in the house, worked for some
time as a sportswriter for the Chattanooga Times Free Press.  According to Mr. Woolwine there was a
tremendous amount of valuable sports memorabilia inside the structure that was also consumed by
the fire.  Damage estimates, including the contents, were placed at around $500,000.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist the homeowner.  There were no injuries and the
cause of the fire is under investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department.
