Apartment Fire in Chattanooga Leaves Mother, 5 Children Homeless

CHATTANOOGA, TENN – Tuesday, March 25, 2008 – At 8:15 AM, the Chattanooga Fire Department
responded to the Gallery Apartments on Gallery Lane in the Hixon area on a reported apartment fire.
As several engine companies were en route, the Captain of Quint 19 reported seeing a column of black
smoke from the area of the reported fire.

Quint 19 arrived on the scene and reported a working fire with one apartment heavily involved.  As
firefighters made a fast attack through the front door, Engine 22 laid a supply line from a nearby
hydrant, establishing a positive water source.  Additional firefighters helped in fighting the fire in the two
story apartment as others went door to door ensuring that all occupants of the building were out.

The fire destroyed unit A-6 of the 6 apartment building.  According to fire investigators, careless
smoking appears to be the cause.  The apartment was currently rented to a mother and her five children
who are now homeless.  The renter says that she has no insurance and is being assisted by the
American Red Cross.  Damage is estimated at about $50,000.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.  Hamilton County EMS and the Chattanooga Police
Department assisted at the scene.
