| Fatal Fire in Fort Oglethorpe FORT OGLETHORPE, GA – Tragedy struck early this morning in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. At 4: 11 AM, Fort Oglethorpe Fire and Rescue was dispatched to Monanaw Avenue on a residential structure fire. Fort Oglethorpe Engine 1, Engine 8, Ladder 1 and Squad 8 responded along with Battalion Chief Doug Flury (907) and Battalion Chief Gary McGhee (908). East Ridge (TN) Engine 1 and Commander Mike Williams (806) responded on automatic aid. Chief Flury arrived in the area very quickly and located the fire at 93 Corley Road. He reported a mobile home fully involved with possible entrapment. When FO Engine 1 arrived, they pulled pre connect lines to the rear of the structure. Engine 8 laid a five inch supply line from the hydrant at Kelsey Road and Page Road to Engine 1. All hands immediately went to work but due to the large amount of fire crews were unable to enter the structure and had to fight it from a defensive posture from the outset. Initially there were reports of two adults inside the residence along with two children. With the assistance of the department Chaplain Neal Brown, Chief Flury was eventually able to determine that both of the children were accounted for as well as one of the adults. Unfortunately, once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, the body of a second adult, a female, was located inside one of the bedrooms. The family dog also died as a result of the fire. Fire also destroyed a four door Honda Accord parked to the rear of the structure. There was no electric service to the house at the time of the fire. The Georgia State Fire Marshal was notified and an investigator from that department was on the scene conducting an investigation. As of this report no exact cause or origin of the fire had been determined. There were not believed to be any other injuries as a result of the fire. Angel EMS was on the scene for stand by. Assistance was also provided by the Catoosa county Sheriff’s Department and by the Georgia Department of corrections fire Department (GDC-9). Catoosa County Engine 3 backed into Fort Oglethorpe Station 1 for coverage and Catoosa County Engine 6 backed into FO Station 8. Fort Oglethorpe Air/Light 1 provided air services and rehab. |
