East Ridge Fire Makes Save

EAST RIDGE, TENN – Saturday, March 22, 2008 – At about 10:05 PM, the East Ridge Fire
Department was alerted to a residential structure fire at 1021 Lansdell Road.  Fire Crews
rushed to the scene and Squad 1 arrived to find heavy smoke from the entire single story
residence and fire burning on the B side of the structure.  As Engine 2 laid a supply line for
a positive water source from a hydrant at Lansdell Road and MCCall Road, Squad 1’s crew
made a fast attack on the fire.

The rapid response of the firefighters ensured a quick knock down on the fire which was
contained to the garage and a small area of the rest of the house.  The remainder of the
structure did suffer heat and smoke damage.

The homeowner was at home when the fire broke out and managed to escape without
injury.  She did alert firefighters to the fact that several pets were in the back yard and also
inside the house.  The dogs that were outside were unharmed.  Firefighters managed to find
one cat inside that was struggling to stay alive.  They brought it outside and administered
oxygen for twenty minutes or so before the cat began to breathe on its own.  Unfortunately
three other cats did not survive the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation.  Damage is
estimated at about $30,000.  Lifeguard EMS was on standby at the scene in case they were
needed.  In addition to Squad 1 and Engine 2, Ladder 3, Support 1, Support 2, Rescue 1
and Fort Oglethorpe Engine 10 were on the scene.
