Abandoned Structure Burns in Harrison

HARRISON, TENN – Monday, February 18, 2008 – At about 11:40 AM, the Highway 58
Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a woods fire in the 6100 block of Ramsey
Forgey Road near Harrison Bay Road.  Minutes after the initial dispatch, firefighters were
told that the call was being upgraded to a structure fire.

Engine 1642 arrived on the scene and found an area in the woods to the rear of 1612
Ramsey Forgey Road on fire.  Also, what had been an abandoned structure was on fire but
the building was already on the ground.  Access to the structure was extremely difficult.
What had been a driveway to the house was inaccessible. The only way to reach the fire
was to go through the yard of a house, across a creek and up a hill through a densely
wooded area.

Firefighters from Engine 1642 and Engine 1641 created a break around the base of the
foundation and requested assistance from the Tennessee Department of Forestry.  Brush
Truck 1697 also responded but was unable to access the fire.  When Forestry arrived they
plowed a break around the area.

Investigators from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department were contacted and on the
scene.  Reports were that no one had occupied the house for over twenty years.  There was
no power to the structure and no reason for there to have been a fire in the structure.  An
investigation into the cause of the fire is being conducted.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.  No damage estimates are available but the
house was supposedly in very bad shape and uninhabitable to begin with.
