1 Injured in Walker County Auto Repair Shop Blaze

WALKER COUNTY, GA – Saturday, January 26, 2008 – Shortly before 3:00 PM, Walker County
Emergency Services was alerted to a commercial structure fire in the 2800 block of South Long Hollow
Road near the Chatooga County line.  Engine 15, Hose 15, Engine 16, Truck 16, Squad 1, 101 (Deputy
Chief Jeff Pollard) and 103 (Assistant Chief James Lively) responded.

When firefighters arrived they found the building, a metal garage, on the ground but still on fire.  There
were several exposure problems, mostly vehicles surrounding the building.  Firefighters pulled several
attack lines from Engine 16 and used Engine 15 and Hose 15 to supply water.  There were no hydrants in
the area so they had to shuttle water from the closest one.

Firefighters did an excellent job of protecting the exposures and preventing the fire from spreading any
further.  Unfortunately the fire building itself and all of the contents were destroyed.  Several lawn mowers,
go carts and at least one pickup truck were destroyed in the fire.  The pickup truck had been in the air on
a lift and was so hot that it actually folded in half with the middle still in the air and both ends touching the
ground.

The owner of the garage said that he had been working on a gas tank when it flashed over.  He was
burned on his face and hands with first and second degree burns.  He was treated on the scene by a fire
medic and medics from Hutcheson EMS and then transported to the hospital.  His condition is unknown at
this time.

A dollar amount has not yet been placed on the loss.  There were no other injuries as a result of the fire.
