Fort Oglethorpe Works Afternoon House Fire

FORT OGLETHORPE, GA – Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - At 2:27 PM, Fort Oglethorpe Fire and
Rescue was dispatched to a reported residential structure fire at 49 Helen Avenue.  Battalion Chief
Doug Flury arrived first and found a single story wood frame residence with smoke showing from
the attic and flames from a room on the D side.

Engine 1 arrived quickly afterwards and mounted an interior attack using an inch and three quarter
line.  A second line was also stretched to the fire side of the building.  Firefighters were able to
quickly knock down the fire but it was obvious that the fire had been burning inside the residence
for quite a while.  The majority of the interior was destroyed and a good portion of the D side of the
building on the exterior was also badly damaged.

There was no one present when the fire was discovered and it did not appear that anyone was
living in the home since there was no electric hooked up.  The homeowner did arrive after the fire
was extinguished.  The fire appeared to have started in the living room area but the cause is under
investigation.  The Georgia State Fire Marshal was called in to assist.

Firefighters from Ladder 1, Engine 8 and Truck 10 along with the Air/Light Truck also responded
for assistance.  Battalion Chiefs Marlin Thompson and Gary McGhee and Assistant Chief Glenn
Davis were also on the scene.  There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
