Walker County Works Second Structure Fire in Eight Hours

WALKER COUNTY, GA – Sunday, January 13, 2008 – Less than seven hours after leaving a
fire that destroyed a large part of an apartment building, Walker county Emergency Services
was again toned out for a structure fire.  This time it was a single family residence at 1080
Harp Switch Road at about 11:30 PM.

Arriving firefighters found a two story wood frame dwelling heavily involved in fire.  There was
no positive water source close by so while some firefighters battled the flames, others were
involved in a tanker shuttle bringing water to the scene.  To make matters worse, the house
was on a steep hill with only a dirt and gravel driveway winding up between the trees.
Firefighters laid a supply line from an engine on the street to one at the top of the driveway
and pumped water up to the scene.

Unfortunately the house was well involved prior to the arrival of firefighters and even though
they made a valiant effort, the residence was pretty much destroyed.  One firefighter was
injured when he fell from an unstable porch at the front of the residence.  He was treated by
medics from Hutcheson EMS and then transported to Hutcheson Medical Center.  His injuries
were not life threatening.

The family living in the house was present when the fire started.  They escaped uninjured.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.  The Walker County Sheriff; s
Department was also on the scene.
