RV a Total Loss In Fort Oglethorpe

FORT OGLETHORPE, GA – Thursday, January 4, 2008 – Just after 5:00 PM, Fort Oglethorpe
Fire and Rescue was dispatched to 217 Grove Street for a recreational vehicle (RV) on fire with
structure endangerment.  Chiefs 903 (Assistant Chief Glenn Davis), 907 (Battalion Chief Doug
Flury) and 908 (Battalion Chief Gary McGhee) responded along with Engine 1, Tanker 1 and
East Ridge Engine 1.

Chief Flury arrived on the scene and reported a fully involved RV with definite structure
endangerment.  Engine 1 arrived on the scene and Lt. Mark Snyder pulled an inch and three
quarter line to the fire and began to extinguish it.  A second line, a booster line, was pulled as a
precaution.  The siding on the adjacent house had already started melting due to the extreme
heat of the fire.  Lt. Snyder also began cooling that down as well.

The RV was totally destroyed by the fire but firefighters were able to keep the house from
suffering any more than cosmetic damage due to the melted siding.  The RV, a 1988 Dodge, had
been sitting idle for an extended period of time.  The homeowner stated that he was able to get it
started but after only about 3 or four minutes of running, it caught on fire.

Total damage estimate is in the neighborhood of about $12,000.  he owner stated that is not
insured.  He further stated that the house is insured.  The cause of the fire is undetermined at
this point and is under investigation.  There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
